Design giant Massimo Vignelli made the infamous, adored, and ultimately retired NYC subway map, famous for not accurately depicting geography, and choosing to prioritize aesthetics and geometry in its place. Emulating Vignelli's signature style for my hometown's transit system presented itself as a fun graphic design exercise.
Following Vignelli's color palette and style, the lines are exclusively flat or at a perfect diagonal angle, while deviating from his blueprint by lending more organic edges to the areas where lines turn.
An additional design challenge was representing directional stations, a quirk that NYC's network does not have.
All vector graphics made in Figma.
